Answers:
The problem with Automatic Updates on a laptop is that when windows decides to update, you may not be online. Since most people spend more time on their desktops, there is a greater chance that you will be turned on and able to get the Automatic Update, The laptop usually gets less use, and is not connected to the Internet when Windows decides to run Automatic Updates.
I could not tell from the way you phrased the question if you were successful in getting the updates manually. that would indicate a whole different problem, probably a corrupted file that the update depends on.Q&A For PC

Wouldn't it be nice if someone shipped a program that just ran, first time it was installed and did not need to be patched!Q&A For PC
Don't bother with MS updates, they are more hassle than good. All you need are up-to-date malware killers. As for the auto update, disable it in the CPQ&A For PC
